The problem of the present research is to outline the epistemic realm of ethics of interpretation. What epistemic domains are included in the ethics of exegesis? “Ethics of belief,” “ethics of research,” and “ethics of science” are domains developed within the moral doctrines and the realm of applied ethics. “Ethics of interpretation” is part of applied ethics focused on moral principles and maxims of the process of exegesis. The act of “interpretation” can, as an action consequent upon the interpreter’s exegetical belief, be in the domain of “ethics of belief,” and can, as a problem-centered process with its own theoretical framework and method, be relevant to “ethics of research.” Moreover, as a scientific discipline, it can be relevant to “ethics of science”. That is to say, interpretation sometimes means an argumentation for, or justification of, the exegete’s beliefs, and is sometimes a research, and sometimes a science! “Ethics of exegesis” can have a similar application space to any of these domains. Therefore, the thesis of this research is that, based on various conceptions of the science of “exegesis,” “ethics of exegesis” can be subsumed under “ethics of belief,” “ethics of research,” and “ethics of science.” The relation between ethics of exegesis and any of these disciplines involves presuppositions which we discuss in this research.
