Abstract
Despite the pivotal role of practical reason in numerous Islamic sciences, its epistemic and normative standing alongside other evidentiary sources has been underexplored. This article, anchored in the theoretical framework of Mohammad Baqer Sadr, begins by elucidating the foundational principles for evaluating the position of a rational ruling in relation to other evidences. It subsequently examines the diverse modalities of convergence and conflict between a rational ruling and other evidentiary sources. Eight distinct forms of interaction are posited, derived from three classificatory criteria: the type of evidence, alignment or opposition, and the context of interaction (legislative or compliance stage). Conflict between two rational rulings at the legislative stage is deemed conceptually untenable. In cases of conflict at the compliance stage with any other evidence, the principles of evidentiary conflict resolution (tazāhum) must be applied. Convergence between two affirmative rational rulings or between a rational ruling and a transmitted (naqlī) ruling reinforces the ruling’s validity. In instances of conflict between reason and transmission at the legislative stage, it is essential to consider the potential for the rational ruling to serve as an indicative context for the transmitted ruling or for the transmitted evidence to function in an advisory capacity. Non-evidentiary conflict between practical reason and another evidence at the legislative stage is deemed impossible, as practical reason itself acknowledges the precedence of the transmitted ruling.
