Orienting the Monotheistic Discourse in Medical Ethics: Responding to Emerging Challenges through a Monotheism-Centered Approach

Abstract

The rapid advancements in medical sciences have given rise to emerging and complex ethical challenges, addressing which requires moving beyond purely secular frameworks and attending to deeper foundations. This study, employing an analytical-inferential method, aimed to explain the role of monotheistic discourse in orienting medical ethics and to provide a structured response to emerging challenges within a monotheism-centered approach. In this vein, contemporary ethical challenges were identified and analyzed, and their relationship with Islamic foundations, centered on the principle of monotheism, was examined. The findings indicate that the monotheistic discourse, by justifying and strengthening the three fundamental virtues of "faith, piety, and devotion" at the levels of insight, inclination, and behavior, establishes a systematic ethical discourse across the four domains of "devotional ethics, social ethics, individual ethics, and environmental ethics." This system not only generates and justifies other virtues but also, by orienting toward the ultimate goal of "divine proximity," offers a novel and structured model for proactively addressing emerging ethical challenges in medical sciences. This study concludes that the monotheistic discourse, beyond being an ethical foundation, plays the role of a comprehensive and guiding "roadmap" for achieving a dignity-based existence in the medical field.
