The present study aims to explore the moral understanding of relationship breakdown in couples’ lives, focusing on how participants understand and interpret relationship breakdown from a moral perspective. This qualitative study employed thematic analysis. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 25 individuals who had experienced relationship breakdown and family experts, selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis involved continuous movement between the data, basic themes, and organizing themes. The findings led to the identification of three overarching themes: “Crossing Moral Boundaries,” “Confronting Moral Conflicts,” and “Justifying Moral Choices.” The first overarching theme was developed through organizing themes such as injustice, erosion of fidelity, erosion of dignity, and the breakdown of caring responsibility; the second through the struggle between preserving the family and preserving the self, the conflict between silence and confrontation, and uncertainty about continuing or ending the relationship; and the third through legitimizing the end of the relationship and constructing moral meaning around it.
