The present study conducts a philosophical-mystical analysis of the moral vice of shuḥḥ (miserliness/avarice) as it appears in the Qur'anic verse "yūqa shuḥḥa nafsihi" (Q. 64:16), employing a qualitative approach and a comparative content analysis method. Data were collected through an examination of exegetical works from both Shi'i and Sunni traditions (fariqayn), hadith literature, philosophical treatises, and mystical sources, and were analyzed across three stages: open, axial, and selective coding. The findings indicate that shuḥḥ extends beyond mere parsimony, comprising an excessive appetitive greed and a concealed impediment to charitable giving and virtuous acts, rooted in a materialist worldview, short-sighted rationality, and egocentrism (anāniyyat), with individual consequences (e.g., severance of divine mercy, anxiety) and social ramifications (e.g., class disparity, weakened solidarity). The comparative analysis revealed four complementary dimensions: theological-practical (divine succor and the practice of zakāt), socio-economic (active altruism and wealth redistribution), philosophical-rational (the contrast between higher rationality and materialist rationality, grounded in the substantial motion of the soul), and mystical-existential (shuḥḥ as a malady of the heart, a veil to monotheism, and the root of envy).
