Abstract
The present study aims to conduct a pathological analysis of seminary users’ activism on social media from the perspective of social ethics. Given the role of the clergy as moral authorities in society, their presence on social media—beyond offering opportunities for religious propagation—may also entail ethical consequences and challenges. This research adopts a qualitative approach and employs a descriptive–analytical method. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 16 seminary and media professors, preachers, and experts. The data were analyzed using an interpretive thematic analysis method, through which 142 initial codes were extracted and organized into six main themes.
The findings indicate that the social media activism of seminary users faces six major ethical pathologies within the realm of social ethics: populism, media arrogance, neglect of dialogical ethics, violation of privacy, disruption of marital relationships, and neglect of child upbringing. Although the last two themes pertain primarily to the domain of family ethics, they are included within the conceptual framework of this study insofar as family ethics, within the Islamic ethical system, can be analyzed as a subset of social ethics.
